چکیده

The formation of microdomains, also called rafts, in biomembranes can be attributed to the surface tension of the membrane. In order to model this phenomenon, a model involving a coupling between the local composition and the local curvature was proposed by Seul and Andelman in 1995. In addition to the familiar Cahn-Hilliard/Modica-Mortola energy, there are additional ‘forces’ that prevent large domains of homogeneous concentration. This is taken into account by the bending energy of the membrane, which is coupled to the value of the order parameter, and reflects the notion that surface tension associated with a slightly curved membrane influences the localization of phases as the geometry of the lipids has an effect on the preferred placement on the membrane. The main result of the paper is the study of the Γ-convergence of this family of energy functionals depending on the size of the sample, involving nonlocal as well as negative terms. Since the limiting energy is minimized by a phase function with minimal interfaces, the physical interpretation is that, within a certain parameter range, raft microdomains are not formed.

Frequency of Adherence Genes cna, fnbA and fnbB in Staphylococcus aureus Isolates from Traditional Cheese

ABSTRACT         Background and Objectives: Several virulence factors are involved in the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus. Surface proteins such as collagen binding proteins (Cna) and fibronectin-binding proteins (FnBP) are important factors in adhesion and invasion of S. aureus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of adherence genes cna...

UW-CPTC 09-1 Initiation of ballooning instability in the near-Earth plasma sheet prior to the March 23, 2007 THEMIS substorm expansion onset

In this work, we analyze the ballooning stability of the near-Earth plasma sheet prior to the initial expansion onset of the March 23, 2007 THEMIS substorm event. Using solar wind data from WIND satellite observation for the substorm event as an input at dayside, we reconstructed a sequence of global magnetospheric configurations around the expansion onset by means of OpenGGCM simulation. These...

A Novel Indicator to Predict the Onset of Instability of a Gravitational Flow on a Slope

In order to present a quantitative indicator for the onset of instability, in this paper, the critical points of a stratified gravitational flow on a slope are found and analyzed. These points are obtained by means of the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations via the standard Arakawa-C finite-difference method. Results show that in the marginal Richardson numbers, the critical...

Material stability analysis of particle methods

Material instabilities are precursors to phenomena such as shear bands and fracture. Therefore, numerical methods that are intended for failure simulation need to reproduce the onset of material instabilities with reasonable fidelity. Here the effectiveness of particle discretizations in reproducing of the onset of material instabilities is analyzed in two dimensions. For this purpose, a simpli...
